A more powerful development of the Class 26 with a 1250hp engine and four-character headcode panel in place of the old disc system. Initially distributed across London Midland, North Eastern and Scottish regions, from the late-60's, they were concentrated in Scotland and continued in passenger, freight and departmental service until 1987.
