One of the most successful and long-lived BR 'Pilot Scheme' designs: the initial 20 locomotives were followed by 26 more (Class 26/1) and all were concentrated on the Scottish Region from the 1960's. Used on everything from sleeping car trains to local goods trips, the 26s proved to be reliable, robust and versatile.
